Properties of ordinary Portland cement
i) Physical Properties:
1. The colour of cement should be uniform.
2 Cement should be free from lumps.
3. Cement should be uniform when touched. Cement should be cool when felt with hand.
4.If a small quantity of cement is thrown into a bucket of water, it
should sink.
5.. Average compressive strength of cement mortar cube of side 7.06cm,should not be less than 11.5 N/mm^2 at the age of 3 days and 25 N/mm^2 at the age of 7 days.
6. Average tensile strength of cement mortar should not be less than 2 N/mm^2 at the age of 3 days and 2.5 N/mm^2 at the age of 7 days.
7.Heat of hydration should not be more than 75 cal/gm after 28 days.
8. Initial setting time of cement should be less than 30 minute and final setting time should be around 10 hours.
9. Fineness of cement should be less than 10 percent in sieve test.
10. Soundness of cement Le Chatelier test should be less than 10 mm.
ü) Chemical Properties
1. The ratio of percentage of alumina that of iron oxide present in the cement should be more than 0.66
2.The ratio of percentage of lime to those of alumina, silica and iron oxide (lime saturation factor) should be between 0.66 and 1.02
3. The total Sulphur content (as SO3 content) should be less than 4%.
4. The total weight of insoluble residue should be less than 1.5 percent.
5. The total loss of ignition should be less than 4 %.
6. The weight of magnesia should be less than 5%.
